This is a small town of about 1600 over about 50 square miles. It was settled by New Englanders, named after Coventry Connecticut. It was first settled around 1785. Dairy herding was prominent, and butter and cheese factories were built.
Coventry is twinned with Coventry England.

William Goodell, an abolitionist, was born here in 1792, but moved to Pomfret, Connecticut with his grandmother after the death of his parents.
