Three mill villages existed in Grafton, known as Farnumsville, Fisherville and Saudersville. The canal effected the economics in Grafton with 951 tons of agriculatural and manufactured goods shipped from the town via the canal. Farmnumsville Cotton Mill was built 1844 to manufacture cotton. Fisherville is the smallest of the Grafton textile mill villages and was founded in 1830, it was a joint venture between Timothy McNamara and the Blackstone Canal Company. The village consisted of building a dam to create a mill pond that would feed both the canal and mill to be built. In 1831, McNamara sold his rights to Peter Farnum who built a brick factory, naming the company the Fisher Manufacturing Co. Industrial development began when David Wilkinson built his cotton mill in 1829. In 1835 E. Sauunders Cotton Co. mill was built.
