Located in the NE corner of historic Sonoma Plaza is the Bear Flag Monument which is comprised of an official California Historical Marker, a figurative public sculpture and a symbolic flag pole. The significance of this site is best described as a historic moment when on June 14,1846, American horsemen rode into Sonoma, proclaimed the "California Republic", and raised the original Bear Flag, which eventually resulted in the United States claiming California as part of the Union officially on July 9th, 1846. The following week, the United States declared war on Mexico. Two years later, when that war ended in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, California and the rest of the Southwest were ceded by Mexico to the United States.
