Former US army rifle range located at Fort Niagara, NY. The ranges were constructed between 1883 and 1886. They were used extensively to train troops in marksmanship, beginning with the Spanish- American War, the Phillipine Insurrection, through World War I and until late 1943 during World War II, when the southeast corner was converted to a POW camp.
In 1950, the Fort was again occupied by the Army, but the ranges, and the Fort itself, were demobilized by 1963. By 1970 most of the berm and all the target mechanisms had been removed.
One target mechanism, showing the dual targets and the raising/lowering mechanism has been preserved, as has the hand-weapon berm just north.
