EN: The ruins of Gutenfels Castle are located on a free-standing rock on the road between Arboldswil and Bubendorf.

The ruins still consists of some remains of walls and rock-cut steps and terraces. The original structure can be well recognized.

The castle was probably founded between 1220 and 1250 by the lords of Eptingen. In 1303 it was mentioned for the first time, as a fief of Frohburg. After the death of Peter of Gutenfels in 1325, the property was returned to Frohburg and pledged to Ramstein. In the earthquake of Basel in 1356 the castle was destroyed and never rebuilt. However, the rights attached to the castle property were still valuable enough, so that the ruins were bought in 1392 from Eptingen, who resold them to the city of Basel in 1411.

In the 1930s and 1960s, the castle has been examined. Since 2010, the site is maintained by private persons in agreement with the municipality and the Cantonal Office for Archaeology.

DE: Die Ruine Gutenfels befindet auf einem freistehenden Felsen an der Strasse zwischen Arboldswil und Bubendorf.

Die Ruine besteht noch aus einigen Mauerresten und in den Fels gehauenen Stufen und Terassen. Ihre ursprüngliche Struktur kann noch gut erkannt werden.

Die Burg wurde vermutlich zwischen 1220 und 1250 von den Herren von Eptingen gegründet. 1303 wurde sie das erste Mal erwähnt, als Lehen von Frohburg. Nach dem Tod von Peter von Gutenfels 1325, ging der Besitz zurück an Frohburg und wurde an Ramstein verpfändet. Beim Erdbeben von Basel 1356 wurde die Burg zerstört und nicht wieder aufgebaut. Die mit dem Burgbesitz verbundenen Rechte waren aber immer noch wertvoll genug, so dass die Ruine 1392 von Eptingen gekauft wurden, die 1411 an die Stadt Basel weiter verkauften.

In den 1930er und 1960er Jahren wurde die Burg untersucht, seit 2010 wird sie in Absprache mit der Gemeinde und dem kantonalen Amt für Archäologie durch Private gepflegt.
