The Dragon Tree, Dracaena draco, is a slow growing subtropical plant that grows by branching every 15 to 20 years. The oldest tree is in Icod, "El Drago Milenario" and is cited as being over 1000 years old but the branching indicates a lower age, perhaps 250 to 350 years. There is no doubt this tree is the oldest but the age is not easily estimated as it is subtropical and does not show annual growth rings.
When the bark or leaves are cut a red resin called Dragons Blood exudes. As one might expect this is claimed to have medicinal, even magical properties.
