The World Windorgel is a sound sculpture consists of vertically placed bamboo tubes in which holes are made. It stands at the end of the Nolledijk in Flushing. The wind organ is a wind instrument which is played by the wind and produces a range of sonorous, sometimes almost humming tones.

First wind chime

The first wind organ was installed in August 1975 at the Nollestrand by the Belgian artist Raphael Augusts Opstaele established collective Mass Moving. This enterprising collectively had a significant amount of bamboo from Cameroon met with the intention of here along the coast of West Africa to the North Pole to build a chain of wind chimes. This so-called 'Sound Stream project, the artists wanted to symbolize the cultural links with Africa.

Second wind chime

During a heavy storm on January 3, 1976, the fifty bamboo poles existing wind organ piece blown and washed away. Thanks to a donation from the World Anjerfonds could Windorgel in October 1976 to be rebuilt by artists from Mass & Individual Moving. As a new location was chosen for the German bunker, a relic from World War II at the end of the Nolledijk.

Third wind chime

In April 1981 the wind organ is largely destroyed by vandals; eight of the twenty on enqueue bamboo tubes were cut down. Thanks to a fundraising of Buro Art in Flushing could Windorgel World in 1983 Nolle Bunker rebuilt. The bench next to the wind organ is constructed around the base of the previous wind organ. In November 1983 the work with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque was officially inaugurated with Fanfare St Juttemis with the organ music as well. Composer and organist Daan Manneke was inspired earlier in 1979 by the Flushing wind organ for his composition 'Pneoo. Soprano Saxophonist Dies le Duc gave in the summer of 2008 a 'Concerto for saxophone and wind organ' on the Nolledijk.

Unlike other places, the World Windorgel in Flushing fully accepted and now hard to imagine. To our knowledge Flushing wind organ is the only remaining permanent wind chime. In 1990 also built a wind organ in Petten. Following complaints from environmental organizations who felt that the sonorous tones would disturb the peace and unacceptable because of the high maintenance the Petten wind organ in 2002 was demolished final.

Zimmer Frei

Since 1985, the Nolle Bunker which the wind organ is equipped with the bitter-humorous text "Zimmer Frei" which is admittedly occasionally painted over but keep coming back. The text was first applied in the night before the opening, the Vlissingsestraat Festival in 1985 by the Italian who lives in Flushing Livio Scaini. The father of the late photojournalist Scaini had to work during the Second World War made mistreated by the Germans and without warning. Although father Scaini never avenged, Livio decided to turn ever to take revenge for the injustice that was done to his father. Scaini for his playful act passed he sounded out his first plan to the owner of cafe Vanuus in the Flushing Walstraat who immediately took a good idea and Scaini also proposed a glass of beer in prospect when the text was applied. When Hema Scaini bought the needed paint and after a last visit to cafe Vanuus is at around 12 o'clock at night began painting the letters. At 3 o'clock in the morning was both the land and sea side the text 'Zimmer frei'. Satisfied with the result Scaini photographed shortly after the bunker with text and gave the picture to the Provincial Zeeland newspaper, which, after long deliberations saw no benefit in placing the photograph. When Scaini few months later visited his daughter in Paris he left his photograph behind at his former employer, the French news agency AGIP (General Agence d'Information et de presse / Agence Photographique de Presse). The photo was including via Reuters posted by newspapers around the world.
