Along the Waterfront Walkway in Nakusp, this pergola is off the south end of Fourth Avenue NW. It is part of what is known as the Spicer Garden, for years lovingly tended by Chris & Jean Spicer. Chris & Jean were owners of Spicer's Farm, a late nineteenth/early twentieth century farm on the east edge of Nakusp which has been designated a Nakusp Heritage Property. The walkway and garden are on a hillside slightly above Upper Arrow Lake, affording a wonderful view south down the lake valley.

We happened to visit Nakusp in the late spring when much of the garden was in bloom, making for a gorgeous sight and a perfect background for the pergola. The long curved pergola is built of heavy timber in a post and beam style with roses and vines climbing up trellises on each side of the pergola. With benches spaced regularly along the walkway nearby, this is a perfect spot for a quiet picnic, overlooking the lake and enjoying the sweet aroma of the flower garden. Or spread out a blanket on the grass under one of the many trees lining the walkway, and picnic in the shade.
