Die Umgestaltungsphasen dieses Baukomplexes durch die Jahrhunderte sind ab etwa 1500 durch eine Fülle schriftlicher und bildlicher Zeugnisse umfassend dokumentiert.
Das heutige Schloss, das als eines der bedeutendsten Bauwerke des Romantischen Historismus in Europa gilt,[1] entstand durch einen tiefgreifenden Um- und Neubau des alten Schlosses in den Jahren 1845 bis 1857 nach Plänen von vier bedeutenden Architekten: Georg Adolf Demmler, Gottfried Semper, Friedrich August Stüler und Ernst Friedrich Zwirner. Für die überwiegende Neorenaissance-Architektur dienten unter anderem französische Renaissanceschlösser als Vorbild. So sind diverse Details durch das Schloss Chambord an der Loire inspiriert. Doch auch regionale mecklenburgische Motive wie der Johann-Albrecht-Stil spielten eine große Rolle.
Aufgrund seiner romantischen Erscheinung und der vergleichbaren Magnetwirkung für Besucher wird das Schweriner Schloss auch als „Neuschwanstein des Nordens“ und als „Märchenschloss“ bezeichnet. Es ist ein deutscher Kandidat für das UNESCO-Welterbe."
