It is a boundary stone from 1766 made of Bentheim Sandstone which served as a boundary marker between Munster and Gelre. On the Dutch side is the arms of Gelderland, on the German side the arms of Münster.

The border issues between Münsterland and Gelre were relatively close to an agreement in 1655 after border surveyors created dozens of maps. A treaty was signed in that year. It yet took another century before the border dispute finally got settled.

During a conference in Burlo held on October 19, 1765 the border definitively established between Aalten, Dinxperlo and Winterswijk and Münster. In the year 1766 were 186 stone border markers placed between Gelderland and Münster.

in the following period the boundary stone formed the border between the Netherlands and the State of Prussia and today between the Netherlands and Germany.
