Located along Forest Ave and part of Laguna Presbyterian Church is a small plaze with a couple of benches centered around a small, bronze sculpture of a mother holding her baby that sits on a concrete base. On the base is a small, bronze plaque that reads:
"THE FUNDS FOR THIS LITTLE
PLAZA WERE A GIFT TO THE
LAGUNA PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH AND THE PEOPLE
OF LAGUNA BEACH,
TO HONOR MY WIFE
ANN VON GREMP.
W.V.G. 1984"
In doing some research online for information about Harold Pastorius, I located numerous websites that contained links to sculptures that he created over the years. The LA Times wrote a very nice article about him dated November 21, 1987. What's odd about that date is that I located an obituary of his wife, Patricia, which mentions that Harold preceded here in death in 1984. Yet another website lists his death in 1983. In any case, it can be assumed that he passed away many years ago, but many of his sculptures live on.
This small, bronze sculpture of a mother and her child is part of many Art in Public Places pieces. In fact, the LA Times mentions the influence that Harold Pastorius' art has had on the communities he has pieces in and reads, "Pastorius, a longtime Laguna Beach resident whose monumental pieces dot the Orange County landscape, is considered the dean of the nation's art-in-public-places practitioners. Not only is he one of the most-commissioned such artists in the country, but his advice is sought from Massachusetts to Alaska by state commissions, schools, private developers and community art councils."
