Civil War camp named for Col. Abraham Piatt, Ohio Zouaves. Its strategic location on the James River & Kanawha Turnpike and the Kanawha River aided Union troops guarding the Kanawha Valley and patrolling western Virginia. Future U.S. presidents, Rutherford Hayes and William McKinley of the 23rd Ohio,were stationed here in 1863
