This piece is made out of a solid rock known as basalt. Basalt forms from shield or underwater volcanoes. This one is a large single piece, carved in an abstract form. It was created in 1979 and installed here in that same year. It's located on a concrete pedestal and stands about 15 feet tall. It's located at the south east corner of the MET museum and is accessible 24/7.
