The park itself is indeed more low-keyed than famed Waikiki Beach, but it can get crowded on weekends when Hawaiians come to surf, picnic and just enjoy the outdoors. Ala Moana Beach Park does front some of Oahu’s prime surfing spots. Lifeguards keep watch over the calmer inshore waters, as well as the sometimes sizable breakers found just outside the protective reef.

Suitable for intermediate and experienced surfers, Kewalos is at the base of the Kewalo Basin on the western end of Ala Moana Beach Park. The name is Hawaiian for shark’s hole, and it is a local shark hangout. Ask a local about what areas you should avoid if you aren’t familiar with this beach. Long and short boards both work at Kewalos, which sees consistent sets of hollow-waved breakers. The best time to surf here is in the summer months when the swells reach up to 6 feet in height. Outside of watching for sharks, the other hazard is the coral reef, which is just a few feet below the surface. The surf and beach tend to get crowded, particularly on weekends.
