"The original tower was built between 1504 and 1556, but it collapsed in 1668. For lack of funds it was not rebuilt. By way of a storm washers crossing tower was placed on the roof, where the church bells were seated. The current tower with two stair towers was first built between 1847 and 1852 by the Ghent architect Louis Roelandt, to an earlier design by architect J. Gerard. For founding the neo-Gothic tower, the church had to be shortened by one bay."
