This Hotel is now open to the public as part of the San Juan Bautista Historic State Park. The living room area features both an organ and a piano.
The sign at the site is in English and Spanish. The English portion reads:
"Making an Office Into a Home
Plaza Hotel Adapted to the Changing Town
Unmarried mission women lived secluded in a dormitory on this
site in 1825. In 1835, the enlarged building became the headquarters for
General Jose Castro's cavalrymen.
After purchasing the property, Hotel owner Angel Zanetta stored
hay in the old building. In 1868, the adobe bricks were recycled into the
present structure.
Zanetta and partner John Comfort hoped to sell this building for use
as the San Benito County Courthouse. The lower floor featured offices
with a central hall. The upper floor was a large open room.
When Hollister became the county seat, Zanetta added the dining
room and kitchen for his family home. Upstairs, town meetings and
dances delighted the town folks."
