The region known as the Badlands offers a rich history of changing landscapes between 25 and 75 million years ago, and their effect on surface construction. This location has been a sea, a swamp, a forest, a savannah and a desert, and each facet left distinctive layers of soil and rock. Separating some layers are ash deposits from nearby volcanic eruptions. Relatively recent erosion has left many of these layers exposed for casual viewing, with thousands of acres available for driving or hiking tours. The coloration of the layers becomes more beautiful with the sun at low angles, after sunrise and before sunset.
Coordinates listed are for the park entrance at the intersection of Highway 240 and interstate 90. The road through the park includes many parking areas with distinctive views.
