At the end of County Home Road between soybean fields sits the old Vernon County Cemetery. The cemetery itself served as the final resting place for those who were residents of the old Vernon County Poor Farm and Asylum. Today the institution serves as the county health department as well as many other county services. The old cemetery has no head stones. It only has one monument which has the names of individuals buried there. The first three people buried here were in 1889. The last burials took place in 1970. There are many Veterans buried here and inscriptions on the memorial also explain some deaths and burials. Veteran markers include: Grand Army of the Republic, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, and Mexican American War.
