The Simplon road leads from Brig to Domodossola and is considered one of the most beautiful Alpine crossings. It is one of the few high alpine passes that have the status of a motorway, but bikes are allowed. The Simplon Pass is the highest point of the International E-road network in Europe.

The pass was known before the Roman period, as evidenced by prehistoric finds in the area. But we don't know anything about the frequency of use. A first heyday of the Simplon Pass began around the 12th century. It became an important transit route between Northern Italy and the Champagne. But due to wars and political changes, the pass sank into insignificance until the 17th century.

During the Thirty Years War, traffic over many other alpine passes came to a standstill. Kaspar Stockalper took the opportunity and established in 1640 a relatively safe connection between Geneva and Milan over the Simplon. This courier company formed the basis for his huge fortune. The whole region benefited from it and hundreds of people earned their living from the pass traffic, but after Stockalper's disempowerment in 1678, the pass once again lost importance.

In 1797, Wallis was conquered by French revolutionary troops and in 1800, Napoleon gave the order to build a road over the Simplon Pass that was of strategic importance for his plans. The construction was led by Nicolas Céard and was finished with a few months lateness in autumn 1805. The first modern road over the Alps was now the shortest and fastest connection between Paris and Milan. With the construction of the Simplon rail tunnel at the beginning of the 20th century, traffic decreased once again somewhat, but this was more than offset by the increasing car traffic. Since the 1950s the street was turned into a winter safe highway. The layout of the Napoleon road has been largely maintained, so not much of the original road is left. Today, nearly one million vehicles per year run on the pass road, including many trucks.

Der Pass war schon vor der Römerzeit bekannt, wie prähistorische Funde in der Umgebung beweisen. Über die Häufigkeit der Nutzung ist aber nichts bekannt. Eine erste Blütezeit des Simplonpasses begann etwa im 12. Jahrhundert. Er wurde zu einer wichtigen Transitroute zwischen Norditalien und der Champagne. Kriegerische Ereignisse und politische Veränderungen liessen den Pass aber bis ins 17. Jahrhundert wider in der Bedeutungslosigkeit versinken.

Kaspar Stockalper nutzte die Gelegenheit und richtete um 1640 eine Verbindung zwischen Genf und Mailand über den relative sicheren Simplon ein. Dieser Kurierdienst bildete den Grundstock für sein riesiges Vermögen. Die ganze Region profitierte davon und hunderte von Menschen fanden ihr Auskommen im Passverkehr, der nach Stockalpers Entmachtung 1678 aber sofort wieder an Bedeutung verlor.

1797 wurde das Wallis von französischen Revolutionstruppen erobert und 1800 erteilte Napoleon den Befehl zum Bau einer Strasse über den Simplonpass, der für seine Pläne von strategischer Bedeutung war. Der Bau wurde von Nicolas Céard geleitet und wurde mit ein paar Monaten verspätung im Herbst 1805 eröffnet. Die erste moderne Strasse über die Alpen war nun die kürzeste und schnellste Verbindung zwischen Paris und Mailand. Mit dem Bau der Simplon-Eisenbahntunnels nahm der Verkehr zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erst wieder etwas ab, das wurde durch den zunehmenden Autoverkehr aber mehr als wettgemacht. Ab den 1950er Jahren wurde die Strasse zu einer wintersicheren Autobahn ausgebaut. Dabei wurde die Linienführung der Napoleonstrasse weitgehend beibehalten, so dass von ihr nicht mehr viel übrig ist. Heute verkehren fast eine Million Fahrzeuge pro Jahr über die Passstrasse, darunter viele Lastwagen.
