EN: The church of San Marco stands on the eastern edge of the village just before the customs to Italy. Even for an amateur it is easy to see that the individual parts of the building are from very different epochs. They have different roof heights and angles, but are all covered with traditional slate slabs. The unplastered Romanesque tower and the eastern part of the chancel still date from the original 12th-century chapel. There is a fresco from the 14th century on the chancel wall. The high altar is dedicated to St. Markus, a side altar dedicated to Antonius was donated in 1683 by Kaspar von Stockalter. In 1968 the nave was rebuilt and considerably enlarged.

Although the prince-bishop of Sion had purchased the secular rule over Gondo from Italy in 1291, the parish remained part of the diocese of Novara until 1822. Maybe for this reason the Italian name of the Church is still today more frequent than the German one.

DE: Die Kirche San Marco steht am Ostrand des Dorfes gleich vor dem Zoll zu Italien. Auch für Laien ist leicht zu erkennen, das die einzelnen Gebäudeteile aus ganz verschiedenen Epochen stammen. Sie haben verschiedene Dachhöhen und -winkel, sind aber alle mit traditionellen Schieferplatten gedeckt. Der unverputzte romanische Turm und der östliche Teil des Chors stammen noch von der ursprünglichen Kapelle aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. An der Chorwand gibt es ein Fresko aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Der Hochaltar ist dem hl. Markus geweiht, ein Antonius geweihter Seitenaltar wurde 1683 von Kaspar von Stockalter gestiftet. 1968 wurde das Kirchenschiff neu gebaut und beträchtlich vergrössert.

Obwohl der Fürstbischof von Sitten die weltliche Herrschaft über Gondo schon 1291 von Italien gekauft worden war, blieb die Pfarrei bis 1822 Teil des Bistums Novara. Wohl deshalb ist auch heute noch der italienische Name der Kirche häufiger als der deutsche.
