The George W. Touhy Park is a small park that is easily passed by without a thought. That would be a mistake because those aren't ordinary trees but ones that include huge chunks of American history hidden within their bark and roots.
This park is also called The Famous Historic Tree Grove but that name hardly rolls off the tongue so most local folk just call it The Touhy Park or Tree Park. The whole trick to appreciating this park is to look closely. Lots of different trees of different sizes and shapes. Maples, walnuts, sycamores, elms, oaks, sweet gums, and magnolias just to mention a few. In all over 80 different trees live in this park.
As if that wasn't cool enough, it's where these trees come from that really makes the park special The seedlings of the trees came from famous and historic places from around the country. Trees from The Alamo, Mount Vernon, Valley Forge, Ellis Island, Antietam and Gettysburg are here as well as many other places from history.
Many of the trees were planted or given by famous and historic people like Henry Ford, Betsy Ross, Jim Bowie. Zack Taylor, Edgar Allen Poe, L.B. Johnson and Abe Lincoln. You will recognize most of the names and places.
Virtually every single tree in this park comes from a famous and historic place or person. Not a huge or spectacular park at first glance but a great place to spend some time learning about American history. Walk lightly, speak softly and listen carefully. These trees have a lot to say.
