The eastern white pine is one of the most painted and photographed trees and is the only five-needled pine native to eastern North America. Tallest of the eastern pines, its lofty top - sometimes reaching 30 metres - is often shaped by prevailing westerly winds. The treetops tend to "point the way" eastward.
For many years the Ottawa Valley was at the heart of the lumber trade in Canada. But in spite of intense logging, many pines remain in the Greenbelt.
