The sign is located adjacent to the Gate and reads:
"INDIA GATE
Formally known as War Memorial Arch and popularly
referred to as India Gate, this monumnet was built to
honour Indian soldiers who fell in battle in World War
I, and Indian and British soldiers who died in the North
West frontier. The simple design, conceived by Edwin
Luyens, and is free of ornamentation except for the urns
which symbolize heroic death, and the pine cones, which
represent birth and rebirth. The arch was inaugurated
on 12th February 1931. Below it is the Amar Jawan
Jyoti, installed in 1971, and dedicated to all Indian
soldiers who lay down their lives in the line of duty."
