The tunnel serves California State Route 41 into Yosemite Valley from Fresno and Southern California from California State Route 99. It was completed in 1933 for a cost of $1.5 million from the state government. The completion of the tunnel marks the third entrance into Yosemite Valley. There is one from the south (this one), one from the west, and one from the north. On the way to Yosemite Valley, along California Highway 41, is probably the best view in the world. You go into a tunnel and on the other end is this spectacular view of Yosemite Valley. Ansel Adam's took his famous photo here and there is a parking lot for visitors and tourist to take photo after photo. You are about 2,000 feet above the valley floor and you are still located about 10 minuets from the actual valley. It is an hour past Fish Camp and the Park gate if you are coming from CA Route 41. If you look on the back of the California Quarter, this is the view that you will see. There is even a virtual cache here and many other waymarks.
