Blanche Butler Ames surmised that the Timucuan Indians had used this site as a landing point in the Halifax River. She designed an Indian head sculpture with the inscription "Indian Well" at the spring of Sulphur water that formed an artesian well. She used this flow of water to form a series of ponds that flow through the park and empty into the river.
