EN: The former Spalen school is located at a junction on the western edge of the old town center. Until 1865, there was a part of the city fortification, the Fröschbollwerk. The school was built from 1876 to 1878 according to the plans of the architect Heinrich Reese in the neo-classical style. Originally, it was a primary school for boys that had the name "Zum Jugendfleiss" (youth diligence). Later, for a few years, a girls' high school was located there.

Since 1988, it is the location of the criminal court of Basel. Originally planned as a temporary solution, but then the building was defined as the definitive location in 1994 and adapted to the new needs by some structural modifications.

DE: Das ehemalige Spalenschulhaus steht an einer Kreuzung am westlichen Rand der Altstadt. Hier befand sich bis 1865 ein Teil der Stadtbefestigung, das Fröschbollwerk. Das Schulhaus wurde von 1876 bis 1878 nach Plänen des Architekten Heinrich Reese im klassizistischen Stil gebaut. Ursprünglich war es ein Primarschule für Knaben, die den Namen "Zum Jugendfleiss" trug. Später war für einige Jahre ein Mädchengymnasium darin untergebracht.

Seit 1988 befindet sich das Strafgericht von Basel in dem Haus. Eigentlich zuerst als Provisorium geplant, wurde das Gebäude 1994 als definitiver Standort bestimmt und durch einige Umbauten an die neuen Bedürfnisse angepasst.
