This sign is situated at the roadside where there is a small car park at the start of two tracks going in opposite directions to eventually reach the remains of The Caterthuns, two hill forts dating back to Pictish times. Both forts were strategically situated on the tops of two hills at the foot of the Grampian Mountains. A narrow motorable road crosses between both hills, and it is on its highest point where the sign is situated, denoting the features of the hills. The White Caterthun is the higher of the two, but is also the closer, being only a quarter of a mile to the west. The Brown Caterthun is just over half a mile to the north-west. Both hills are now managed by Historic Scotland.
