These fossilized roots were discoverd and excated in 1962 by Morehead State Univeristy professors Allen Lake and James Chaplin. These are the roots of a lepidodendron, a tree sized fern that lived in tropical swamp near what is now laurel Creek in Elliott County. This stigmarian root system is from early Pennslylvanian aged rocks, roughly 315 million years old. as in most Kentucky tree fossils, p particles of sand were washed into the spaces left by the decay of organic matter formin a cast of the original structure.
