The Caterthuns are a pair of hilltop enclosures dating back over 2000 years ago, situated at the foothills of the Grampian Mountains six miles north of the town of Brechin. Excavation has determined that they were built between 750BC and 200BC.
The White Caterthun is the higher of the two at 298 metres above sea level and features a rock cut ditch with a bank, a cup marked stone possibly from the bronze age. a well, ring ditch structures and a rampart with double palisades.
The Brown Caterthun is 287 metres and features nine radiating entrances, dump ramparts and ditches with palisade corridors and the remains of a stonewall.
Both hills can be easily reached from a minor road which heads up from the south, there is a small car park at its highest point directly between them.
