Stephan Jantzen was born in Warnemünde in 1827. His maritime career started at the age of 14, when he enlisted as ship's boy on the German Galleass "Argo." At the age of 29 he received his Captain's license and served as Captain of the Barque "Johannes Keppler" (which he partially owned) from 1856 until 1866.
In 1866 he was appointed chief pilot of his hometown Warnemünde. As such, he was also captain of the local chapter of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service. In 47 years of service, Jantzen was personally responsible for the rescue of over 100 shipwrecked sailors. |
