Charles S. Hughes, 76, departed this life on Thursday, May 21,1998, at a UTMB hospital, Galveston. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 1998, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Galveston, with the Rev. Patricia A. Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park, Alta Loma, Texas. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m., and a wake service will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd, at the chapel of Fields Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Hughes was born November 20, 1921, in Galveston Texas. He attended Central High School and Prairie View Extension School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Gus Allen Post No. 614. He was a federal government employee for 33% years and retired from the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Willa B. Hughes of Galveston; two daughters, Shirley Hughes Young and son-in-law, Robert R. Young of La Marque, and Pamela Hughes Collins and son-in-law, George Collins Sr. of Missouri City; one son, Elder Charles S. Hughes Jr. and daughter-in-law, Augustine, of Diamond Bar, California; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren; cousin, Mary Agnes Hopkins; other relatives and friends.
