The former quarry has a great variety of different rock types (both sedimentary and igneous) present in such a relatively small area. The quarry exposures are representative of geological features in the Wollongong-Kiama area, and because the site is abandoned, are amongst the most accessible outcrops in the district.
The former quarry occupies the majority of the headland east of Bombo township. The shoreline at the southern end of the headland comprises a narrow rock platform consisting of red/brown Kiama sandstone; about half way up the adjacent cliff this formation is overlain by Bumbo latite, a dark green/black porphyritic igneous rock, which occupies most of the quarry area. Columnar jointing is particularly well developed in the latite, producing a Giant's Causeway effect; columnar pillars around the periphery of the quarry are up to 10m-15m in height.
Access to the quarry is by walking only. Park at the Bombo Beach carpark & follow the blue posts.
