Construction for the Catalan Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma began in 1229 and was finished in 1601. The courtyard is located near the eastern end of the Cathedral. You reach the courtyard by entering the on the western side of the Cathedral and walking through the Cathedral.

The draw well is an original feature of the Cathedral. It is located in the center of a courtyard surrounded by colonnaded cloister. The picturesque stone well is fitted with an iron bucket on a chain that is operated with the aid of a pulley. The water retrieval system is supported by an ornate iron frame with a cross on the top that straddles the well. The well is probably operational, however it is fitted with a large iron cover which prevents further inspection. Adjacent to the well is a small stone basin that sits on a pedestal to reach the height of the well.
