Marker Title (required): Mining

Marker Text (required):
Silver was discovered in 1862, and was the reason for Austin’s existence. Within two years, at the peak of the boom, there were over 8,000 people. Austin miners produced $50 million in silver. By 1865, Austin was Nevada’s second largest city. Today the area is well known for its fine quality turquoise and is one of the major production centers for this gemstone. Gold is also an important mineral in this area. The development of modern mining methods has made it possible to process low-grade ore and make it profitable. Modern-day mining, prospecting, and drilling are an ongoing activity in the area. Any mining operations contribute significantly to the economy of the area.
