History plaque located on wall at Austin’s outdoor Loneliest Highway Visitors Center.
Marker Title (required): Austin Stone

Marker Text (required):
Historic construction materials in Austin consisted of adobe brick, fired brick, wood and rock. Built on steep walls of the Pony Canyon, plentiful native granite quarried from local sources enabled early settlers to shore up the hillsides and create level building foundations. Austin stonemasons constructed grand structures such as Stokes Castle built in 1897. Made of granite, hewn and put in place by hand winches, the large stones that form Stokes Castle were held in position by rock wedges and clay mortar. Other buildings constructed with local stone include St. Augustine’s Catholic Church built 1866, St. George’s Episcopal Church built 1877-78 and the Gridley Store built 1863. Original granite street curbs were found onsite and reset adjacent to the sidewalk at this Visitors/Welcome Center. The modern rock wall (at left) was built using the same methods as the early stonemasons who created the fine structures in the town of Austin.
