This is lock 62 on the Trent & Mersey canal, known as Wheelock lock 62.

It is one of the locks on what old boaters knew as the Cheshire Flight but modern boaters call Heartbreak Hill. I’m never sure why, as it is a gentle flight with lots of long pounds where overnight stops can be taken if you want to. This is unlike real back breakers such as the Caen Hill flight at Devizes on the Kennet & Avon where the pounds are only really long enough for a couple of boats.

The Cheshire Flight consists of 26 locks which are numbers 41 to 66. Lock 41 is at the top at Kidsgrove near Harecastle tunnel and lock 66 is at the bottom at Wheelock. The locks were doubled up to speed the traffic and many of the pairs are still operational and a few have one of the pair closed or filled in.

Apart from locks 1 to 6 (at the eastern end) and 75 & 76 at the northern end of the Trent & Mersey canal, all the other locks are single width locks (approx. 7' 6").

The Trent & Mersey canal was opened in 1777 and is 93 miles long from Derwent Mouth to Preston Brook and has 76 locks.

The Trent & Mersey canal has very distinctive milestones showing the distances to Preston Brook and Shardlow (see Milestones category). They are all cast iron; 59 are originals from Rougeley & Dixon foundry in Stone, marked R&D Stone 1819; 34 are replacements marked T&MCS 1977.
Waterway Name: Trent & Mersey canal

Connected Points:
The Trent & Mersey canal links the Rivers Trent and Mersey (via the Bridgwater) and also has junctions with many other famous canals including the River Weaver via the Anderton boat lift which then joins the Manchester Ship canal. Other canals include the Derby (now disused), Coventry, Staffordshire & Worcestershire and Macclesfield canals. It also has a junction with the Middlewich branch of the Shropshire Union canal.
