Geschichte
Mittelalter

History
middle Ages
The village of Franken is probably a Franconian settlement from the Merovingian period. The first documentary mention of the village of Franconia with its church took place on March 31, 1131, when Pope Innocent II confirms to the Bonner Cassius-Stift the possession of the church in Franconia: Frankin, ecclesiam cum decimis - "Franks, church with tithes". A total of 30 churches are listed in this document.
In the year 1147 passed the possession of a hereditary property to Maria Laach, 1285 to the monastery Steinfeld. In 1295, the German King Adolf of Nassau pledged half of the Sinzig, which was formally part of the Reichsgut, to which Franks also belonged, to Count von Jülich. The next King Albrecht again handed over this half to Cologne Archbishop Wigbold. In 1348, King Charles IV confirmed the pledging of the half of Sinzig and Franconia to Margrave Wilhelm von Julich; In this context, Franks went as a loan to the knight Heinrich von Sinzig (1336-1361), and in 1374 to Rolmann von Ahrenthal. In 1376, the reign of Duke William of Jülich was transferred to Count Margrave Wilhelm von Berg.
