This is the first of a fleet of 18 Challenger aircraft flown by the Air Force in the transport and Electronic Warfare role.
601 was taken on strength from Canadair in April, 1983. It spent its early career with 412 Squadron, based in Ottawa, used in the VIP transport role.
From 1995 until 2000 it was based with 434 Composite Squadron in Greenwood, NS, and used in the Electronic Warfare Role.
In 2000, it returned to 412 Squadron and the VIP transport role.
It was retired in 2016 and donated to the National Air Force Museum.
Challenger 601 is unique among Canadian military aircraft in that it has "nose art" in the name of "Cosmo", a stylized CC109 Cosmopolitan aircraft on the left side, in honour of the Cosmo fleet that was flown by 412 Squadron until replaced by the Challengers.
