Memorial Fountain and Statue are located in Memorial Square in the center of Chambersburg, Franklin County.
Installed in 1875, the fountain and statue stand in the middle of the Square on a hexagonally shaped grassy plot about 50 feet in diameter.
The fountain and statue are made of cast-iron. The fountain is 26 feet in height with a 30 feet diameter ground basin. The statue is about 6 feet high and is of a standing uniformed soldier holding a rifle, with the stock resting on the ground.
Plaque Reads:
ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THE SOLDIERS OF FRANKLIN COUNTY WHO FOUGHT FOR THE UNION IN THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES 1861-1865, DEDICATED JULY 17TH, 1878.
Approximately 40 feet southwest of this tablet Robert E. Lee and A. R. Hill met mounted, and held a brief conference acout 10 O'Clock AM on Friday, June 26, 1863. This was the first move which ultimately led to the decision on Monday, June 29th, to concentrate the army of Northern Virginia in the direction of Gettysburg, and decided the location of the battle with the army of the Potomac at that place.
