Die architektonisch gestaltete Wand hinter dem Denkmal trägt Reliefs mit Darstellungen aus Grillparzers Dramen: links „Ahnfrau", „Der Traum ein Leben" und „König Ottokars Glück und Ende", rechts „Sappho", „Medea" und „Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen" (alle von Rudolf Weyr). Das Denkmal wurde nach Grillparzers Tod von einem Denkmal-Komitee unter dem Ehrenschutz von Erzherzog Carl Ludwig und dem Vorsitz von Johann Adolf Fürst zu Schwarzenberg realisiert (enthüllt 23. Mai 1889).
