Shawnee's Woodland Veterans Park has an extensive and beautiful military memorial. On display here is a full-sized replica of the bow anchor from the U.S.S. Oklahoma which was sunk at Pearl Harbor. Constructed of fibreglass, it stands on a 4 ft. high concrete five-sided cube.
A black granite plaque beneath the anchor reads:
"U.S.S. OKLAHOMA BB-37 / In January 2012 the Shawnee Veterans Memorial Committee finalized the acquisition of this full-scale display-version of the actual bow anchor from the U.S.S. Oklahoma BB-37 which was sunk by the Japanese during the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 resulting in the fiery deaths of her 429 Sailors and Marines. On behalf of these brave souls we must seek 'CONSTANT AND ETERNAL VIGILANCE / THE PRICE OF LIBERTY"
The original iron anchor is on display in Campbell Park in Oklahoma City. (
