The village of Comrie in Perthshire is situated on the Highland Boundary Fault, and as such has a reputation for experiencing earth tremors, albeit very minor ones. The River Lednock flows down Glen Lednock towards the village from the north and crosses the fault a mile from Comrie, with the river plunging from highlands to lowlands in a series of three falls.

10,000 years ago, as the climate warmed up, glaciers occupying Glen Lednock released a torrent of stone-laden icy water. This cut through the soft rock of the lower glen leaving behind unusual rock structures, water is forced through a narrow passage in the rock into a deep pool below.

The falls are named the Deil's Caldron or Cauldron (Devil's Kettle), and force their way through the narrow rock ledges, with ash, rowan and elder lining both sides of the steep bank.

The falls can be reached from the village via a circular walk up the glen. A path climbs up the western side of the river, passing the smaller falls of the Wee Caldron, before reaching a specially made wooden walkway which leads to a viewing platform where the falls can be seen.
