This statue of St. Matthew the Evangelist is in Calvary Cemetery on West Lake Road in Erie, PA.
St. Matthew was one of Christ's twelve Apostles, as well as the author of the first Gospel included in the New Testament. His calling by Christ is recorded in his own Gospel (Matthew 9:9): "And when Jesus passed on from hence, he saw a man sitting in the custom house, named Matthew; and he saith to him: Follow me. And he rose up and followed him." After writing his Gospel, it is believed that St. Matthew preached the Gospel in Judea before leaving to preach in other areas, where he was eventually martyred. His feast day is celebrated on September 21st.
