The museum, which opened in 1988, is housed in the armory. A bronze dedication plaque near the entrance shows the donation of this historic building.
According to the museum website, its Mission Statement is: "The purpose of the Greater Southwest Historical Museum is to collect, preserve, and interpret the social, cultural, and economic history of South-Central Oklahoma, with special emphasis on Ardmore and Carter County."
The museum has no admission charge, and has numerous permanent exhibitions of local interest. The Carter County Genealogical Society also maintains books and archives here for genealogical research.
Programs for school children field trips are provided during the year.
