The distinctive Forth Bridge was opened on March 4th 1890 and designed by engineers Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker, the main contractor was Tancred Arrol. At the time it was longest span in the world and still remains one of the longest.
54,000 tons of mild steel plate were rolled and riveted into 4m diameter tubes with three double-cantilever towers rising 110 metres above granite pier foundations with a span of 521 metres.
The bridge has remained largely unchanged since its opening and is still painted a distinctive red colour.
It gains World Heritage status by virtue of being a masterpiece of creative genius and an extraordinary and impressive milestone in the evolution of bridge design and construction.
