There are a variety of signs at the site which deal with specific details of the Mills.
This is one of a group of three signs which deal with the history of the Thompson’s Mills.
Text of the Sign:
Why Here?
With bread as a staple, growing and grinding wheat was vital to the first EuroAmerican settlers.
Before this mill was built, it took farmers weeks to haul their wheat to the closest mill, wait for it to be ground, and then haul the flour home.
Richard Finley seized the opportunity. He purchased the land and the rights to use the water and built a mill on this site in 1858.

Finley’s success in the gold fields of California funded the mill
Finley purchsed the land from Americus Savage for $50 and the rights to use water from Robert Elder for $75.
Water diverted from the river was dammed to make a millrace to provide power.
