Central Oregon Coast Historic Site history sign along the Yaquina Bay Road between Newport and Toledo, Oregon.
Text of the Sign:
Oysterville
An appetite for a rare and delicate oyster changed the Yaquina Bay area forever. Starting in 1861, shipping merchnats from San Francisco came to harvest the species Ostrea lurida in the bay east of what is now Newport.
Located on the Coast Reservation, the beds legally belonged to the Indians. A court decision upheld the right of the Reservation to be paid by harvesters for taking the oysters.
Captain James J. Winant was the pilot of the first steam-powered vessel to enter Yaquina Bay. He set up a harvest operation, sending oysters back to San Francisco and bringing other goods to Yaquina Bay.
Settlements on both sides of the bay were called Oysterville, Oyster City, and Winant.
