Supplying a Remote Outpost
Perched in isolation on the western edge of the continent, Yaquina Head Lighthouse was a challenge to supply. What could not be grown or bartered with neighbors had to be delivered to the headland. Some supplies were transported along a rought wagon road from Newport, while others were brought by ship directly to Yaquina Head.
“Supply Steamer Shubrick arrived at 3 P.M. landed annual supply of Oil on the beach also stores for Light keepers and left at 8 P.M. bound south.” — Lighthouse keeper’s log, June 27, 1882

The US. Light-House Service extended a rough wagon road to bring supplies from the docks at Newport to the light station at Yaquina Head. Wagons drove along Agate Beach for part of the route. As the wagon road gradually improved, early automobiles brought increasing numbers of visitors to the lighthouse.
The lighthouse tender Shubrick regularly delivered lighthouse inspectors and supplies to Yaquina Head. The side-wheel steamer anchored offshore, while smaller boats called “lighters” ferried the supplies to Cobble Beach. They delivered oil for the lighthouse lamp as well as personal items, such as books for the light station library.
In 1885 a tramway was built in the notch along the cliff just ahead of where you are standing. Workers hauled lard oil and other supplies up the cliff using either a hand-cranked winch or horses harnessed to the tram.
