The Sevier County Courthouse in DeQueen is located on a full city block, bounded by W. DeQueen and W. Stillwell Avenues, and N. 3rd and N. 4th Streets.
This is a three-story buff brick building with a flat roof. The building is rectangular, with a slightly projected bay at the front, and a larger addition perpendicular at the rear. One-story additions have been added to the north and rear, built at a later time. The building faces East. The projecting center bay has a arched entryway on the ground floor, with a stone surround with formed medallions. There are two metal and glass door, with a segmented fanlight above. The second and third floors above have six brick pilasters with a 1-over-1 window in each bay on each upper floor. Above this is a frieze with the words "SEVIER COUNTY COURT HOUSE". The date of constructed is shown above that, in Roman numerals "MCMXXX" (1930).
Windows on the three remaining elevations are set in ones and twos with a few bricked in. A projected belt course runs around the building above the first floors windows. The frieze and a cornice are on all sides on the upper wall, with a raised parapet.
Sevier County has a population of approximately 17,000. The County was formed in 1828 with the county seat at that time being Paracliffa. In 1871, the seat was moved to Lockesburg and then in 1905, some local merchants in DeQueen offered to build a $10,000 court house if the County Seat would be moved, and it was. Then, in 1930, this beautiful building was constructed. The courthouse houses most of the County offices, and well as the court court.
