EN: The first station of Gossau on the line St. Gallen-Winterthur opened in 1856. In 1913 it was moved from its previous location on the market square to its present location south of the old village center. The reason for the new building was the opening of the narrow gauge line to Herisau. These two lines still exist today. The narrow-gauge line leads today as S23 of the Appenzell railways from Gossau via Herisau and Appenzell to Wasserauen. On the SBB standard gauge line, Gossau is served by the St. Gallen S-Bahn lines S1 and S5 from St. Gallen to Wil and Weinfelden. In addition, various RegioExpress and long-distance trains stop in Gossau with destinations like St. Gallen, Zurich, Chur, Basel, Lausanne and Munich. From the square in front of the station there are six bus lines into surrounding areas.
The standard gauge lines are right next to the main building, the platforms the narrow gauge line are a little south of it connected by a pedestrian tunnel.
The listed station building consists of a two-story central section with a mansard roof and two projecting rounded gables on the long sides. On both sides one-storey side wings with roof terraces are attached. The strongly rounded canopy above the main entrance has a shell-like appearance.
DE: Der erste Bahnhof von Gossau wurde 1856 eröffnet und liegt auf der Linie St. Gallen-Winterthur. 1913 wurde er von seinem vorherigen Standort am Markplatz an seine heutige Stelle südlich des alten Dorfkerns verlegt. Der Grund für den Neubau war die Eröffnung der Schmalspurlinie nach Herisau. Diese beiden Linien gibt es auch heute noch. Die Schmalspurstrecke führt heute als S23 der Appenzeller Bahnen von Gossau über Herisau und Appenzell nach Wasserauen. Auf der Normalspurstrecke der SBB wird Gossau von der St. Galler S-Bahnlinien S1 und S5 von St. Gallen nach Wil, bzw, Weinfelden bedient. Ausserdem halten verschiedene RegioExpress und Fernzüge nach St. Gallen, Zürich, Chur, Basel, Lausanne und München. Vom Platz vor dem Bahnhof gibt es sechs Buslinien in umliegende Gegenden.
Die Normalspurlinien liegen direkt neben dem Hauptgebäude, die Perrons der Schmalpurstecke sind etwas südlich davon durch eine Paserelle erreichbar.
Das denkmalgeschützte Bahnhofsgebäude besteht aus einem zweistöckigen Mittelteil mit einem Mansarddach und zwei vorspringenden gerundeten Giebeln an den Längsseiten. An beiden Seiten sind einstöckige Seitenflügel mit Dachterassen angebaut. Das stark gerundete Vordach über dem Haupteingang hat ein muschelartiges Aussehen.
